High-intensity magnetic stimulation for the rehabilitation of patients suffering traumatic lesions of upper extremity nerves

Musaev A.V., Guseinova S.G., Mustafaeva E.E.

Abstract

The present study included a total of 40 patients presenting with traumatic lesions of 64 peripheral nerves and nerve bundles treated by traditional therapeutic and neurophysiological (electroneuromyography, transcranial magnetic stimulation) methods. The study was focused on the evaluation of the influence of high-intensity magnetic stimulation on the clinical course of the disease and the functional state of the neuromotor apparatus. The results of neurophysiological observations indicate that traumatic lesions in the peripheral nervous system are characterized by changes not only in the segmental-peripheral region of the neuromotor apparatuses but also in its central part. These changes are manifest as the altered conduction in the corticospinal tract associated with its structural and functional disturbances. It is concluded that the application of high-intensity magnetic stimulation at the early stage of rehabilitation of patients suffering traumatic lesions in the peripheral nervous system appreciably contributes to the regress of motor, sensory, trophic, vegetative, and vascular disturbances; in addition, it improves the structural and functional state of the neuromotor apparatus.

Karkavina A.N., Kulishova T.V., Kozhanova T.B., Dorovskikh N.V.

Abstract

This paper reports the results of evaluation of the effectiveness of the combined treatment of knee joint osteoarthrosis in patients of advanced age with the use of general magnetotherapy. A total of 152 patients aged between 60 and 74 years presenting with stage II-III knee joint osteoarthrosis were given combined therapy. The main group received conservative treatment including dietary and medicamental therapy, physical exercises, and general magnetotherapy. It was shown that inclusion of the latter modality reduces severity of articular syndrome, improves peripheral hemodynamics and the quality of life estimated from changes of objective and subjective signs and parameters. It is concluded that general magnetotherapy is an important component of the combined treatment of knee joint osteoarthrosis.

Efficiency of polarized polychromatic non-coherent light in the combined treatment of jaundice in newborn infants

Davydkin N.F., Pechkurov D.V., Ustinova G.N.

Abstract

In the majority of cases, there is a lack of evidence-based foundation for the application of traditional medicamental therapy of neonatal jaundice. The use of phototherapy with monochromatic light is efficacious, but the method is labourious and fraught with adverse effects. Our original approach protected by a RF patent is based on the use of polarized polychromatic non-coherent light and is free from the aforementioned drawbacks. A comparative randomized study has demonstrated a significantly greater decrease of the bilirubin level in a group of newborn infants given polarized non-coherent phototherapy in addition to traditional medicamental treatment in comparison with the patients managed by drug therapy alone.

Experience with the application of intermittent pneumocompression at the early stage of treatment of patients with fractures of the lower extremities

Chukina E.A., Shchetkin V.A., Klyukvin I.Y., Mezhebitskaya L.O., Vaza A.Y., Zheltov R.V., Titov R.S.

Abstract

The objective of the present study was to carry out comparative analysis of clinical and anthropometric characteristics as well as results of ultrasonic diagnostics in patients with fractures of the lower extremities managed by combined treatment that included intermittent pneumatic compression. Patients of the control group received similar treatment without intermittent pneumocompression during their hospital stay. The results of the study indicate that the application of intermittent pneumatic compression at the early post-traumatic period reduces severity of pain syndrome, promotes activization of the patients, and accelerates resolution of soft tissue oedema in the affected limb.

Aerosol therapy with mineral waters for the treatment of patients presenting with chronic bronchitis and bronchial asthma

Smirnova I.N., Zaripova T.N., Antipova I.I.

Abstract

The present study was designed for comparative analysis of the curative action of inhalation therapy with the use of a variety of mineral waters in patients presenting with chronic bronchitis and bronchial asthma. It has been shown that aerosol therapy with mineral waters produces not only local but also systemic anti-inflammatory effect. Specifically, it improves bronchial patency, activates the lipid peroxidation system and antioxidative mechanisms, and enhances adaptive capabilities of the patients with chronic bronchitis and bronchial asthma.

The relationship between psychic disorders and quality of life in patients with pulmonary heart and effects of combined therapy

Alyavi A.L., Rakhimova D.A.

Abstract

The objective of the present work to study the relationship between psychological regulatory factors and the quality of life in patients with bronchial asthma complicated by pulmonary heart who had experienced remodelling of the right ventricle of the heart in the preceding period. The patients were treated by standard therapy, ozonotherapy and/or phototherapy. It was shown that combination of all the three therapeutic modalities allows the unfavourable effects of inter-related pathogenetic processes to be significantly reduced. The improvement was especially pronounced with respect to lung ventilation function, psychological regulatory factors, right ventricular dilatation, and parameters of the quality of life.

Physiotherapeutic methods for the correction of vegetative dysfunction in adolescents presenting with gastroduodenitis

Bogdanova M.A., Uzunova A.N., Petrunina S.Y.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to evaluate effects of low-frequency magnetotherapy and dynamic photochromotherapy included in the combined rehabilitative program on the severity of clinical symptoms of chronic gastroduodenitis, inflammatory processes in gastric and duodenal mucosa, and disorders of vegetative regulation in 103 adolescent patients. The analysis of the results has demonstrated that inclusion of dynamic photochromotherapy in the combined rehabilitative treatment of patients with chronic gastroduodenitis can be recommended in cases of prevailing activity of the sympathetic component of the vegetative nervous system whereas magnetotherapy may have beneficial effect in patients with initial vagotonia. It is proposed that dynamics of cardiorhythmographic characteristics with special reference to the differential contribution of low- and high-frequency components to the total spectral output should be used as a criterion for the efficiency of rehabilitative treatment of patients with chronic gastroduodenitis.

Balneologic and manual therapy of erectile dysfunction in patients with lumbosacral osteochondrosis

Zhuravlev I.E., Tereshin A.T.

Abstract

This study included 40 patients aged from 24 to 45 (mean 33.4±4.3) years presenting with lumbosacral osteochondrosis and concomitant erectile dysfunction from 1 to 5 (mean 3.2±0.7) years in duration. The treatment included narzan water baths, manual therapy, and physical exercises combined with psychotherapeutic correction of sexual dysadaptation. It resulted in the elimination of pain syndrome in 77.5% of the patients, locomotor disorders in 81.7%, paresthesia in 67.5%, and psychoemotional tension in 52.2%. The sexual function was normalized in 47.5% of the treated patients, vegetative regulation in 44.4%, and hemodynamics in cavernous bodies in 45%. Fifteen (37.5%) of the patients with lumbosacral osteochondrosis and erectile dysfunction still retained normal sexual function 12 months after the treatment.

The influence of physical exercises on histo- and ultrastructure of the gastrocnemius muscle

Isaev A.B.

Abstract

The objective of the present work was to study ultrastructural changes in the gastrocnemius muscle of 20 adult male rats undergoing moderate physical stress for 1.5-2 hours twice weekly during 1, 3, and 5 months. The histological study was carried out with the use of electron microscopic and morphometric techniques. It demonstrated congestion of blood in arterioles and venules, an increase in the number of eosinophils, and enhanced aggregation of formed elements of blood. The ultrastructural study revealed the increase of the number and size of mitochondria, broadening of channels in sarcoplasmic reticulum and enlargement of micropinocytic vesicles in the capillary endothelium. These changes are interpreted as manifestations of compensatory adaptation to the hypoxic conditions developing under effect of physical exercises.
