Abstract

Radonotherapy is a radiotherapeutic modality taking advantages of alpha-emission from radon. Activity of this isotope is measured in Becquerels (Bq); the arbitrary unit of activity is Couri (Ci). Specialists distinguish between radon waters of natural and artificial origin.
Radon exerts either primary or secondary action on living tissues which accounts for the wide application of radonotherapy for the treatment of a variety of pathological conditions. New methods of radonotherapy have been developed during the last 15-20 years. They permitted to significantly increase the efficiency of its application for the treatment of many diseases. Radon-containing tablets for oral intake, radon-water microenemas, radon-containing suppositories, gelatin capsules filled with radon-enriched vegetable oil, radon-oil concentrate for applications, and "dry" radon baths are currently available for the treatment of various diseases. The latter modality (radon baths) are the most popular and efficacious mode of the medical use of radon sources. Further work for the creation of new methods of radon therapy is of primary importance to ensure more differential approach to its prescription on an individual basis.
